The Young Farmers & Ranchers (YF&R) Excellence in Agriculture Award competition is designed as an opportunity for young farmers and ranchers to earn recognition, while actively contributing and growing though their involvement in Farm Bureau and agriculture.

Early Bird Sponsor Registration Form Deadline is Saturday, Dec. 31, 2022. Forms are due by Dec. 31, 2022, and invoices will be sent for payment in January.

USDA recently reported that 2022 represents the highest ever year-to-year increase in production costs, with farm production expenses increasing 18% in one year. High commodity prices mean program payments are less likely to be triggered in most cases, and farmer margins (revenue after expenses) will be narrow. Discussion of the 2023 Farm Bill, and how best to address the needs of farmers has already begun.

A mandate previously announced by the APHIS (Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service) division of the USDA requiring certain cattle and bison that cross state lines to be tagged with an RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) ear tag, has been revoked and is no longer set to take effect. This announcement was made on March 23rd, 2021, by the USDA.

The roughly two-month dry period during the summer of 2022 has been the worst drought in 10 years. While it has had an impact on all Arkansans, the drought has hit livestock and hay producers across the state especially hard. Livestock such as cattle, horses, sheep, goats and llamas rely on forages (grass, hay and other plants) for most or, in some cases, all of their diet, and this year’s drought has caused significant loss of forage availability statewide.
