The Arkansas Farm Bureau Scholarship Foundation Committee has named the 13 recipients of the $3,000 Farm Bureau Foundation scholarships for the 2020-21 school year.

A $10 million endowment was presented to the University of Arkansas System recently by the Fryar Family Charitable Foundation. The donation was to establish the Fryar Price Risk Management Center of Excellence. Dr. Ed Fryar sat down with us this week to discuss the idea behind the Center and the agricultural impact he hopes it will make not only in Arkansas but across the nation.

Dr. Jeyam Subbiah heads the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture's Food Science Department and is also lead investigator for the UA Agricultural Experiment Station's portion of a USDA 5-year research project. The collaborative effort involves nine universities studying food safety in low moisture foods such as nuts, dried foods and cereals. Students are home on their summer break, as schools in Arkansas anticipate reopening in August. Sarah Lane, Farm to School and Early Childhood Education Program coordinator for the Arkansas Department of Agriculture, provides an update on how school gardens are being maintained during the summer and how Farm to School is more important than ever during the Covid-19 pandemic, continuing to provide fresh, local produce for children and families in need.

RaLynnda March of Cave City (Sharp County) is the 2020 recipient of Arkansas Farm Bureau’s Marvin Vines Memorial Scholarship.

Centerpoint School District recently announced a new charter school program called Centerpoint Academy of Agriculture and Skilled Trades. Funded by some major grants, this new initiative launches in August of this year.

Applications are now available to high school students for the summer Medical Applications of Science for Health (M*A*S*H) camps. These two-week M*A*S*H camps will be offered at 35 different medical facilities throughout Arkansas and are designed to expose rising high-school juniors and seniors to healthcare-related careers.
